The Instagram Generation

Living a moment as an anticipated memory.

Filippo DecottoFilippo Decotto

Be happy for this moment, because you know it will pass instantly. Professor Daniel Kahneman highlights perfectly how Instagram conquered the heart of every user by giving them the sensation of an anticipated memory.

The ‘Instagram Generation’ now experiences the present as an anticipated memory.— Professor Daniel Kahneman

Imagine one of those moments where you are undoubtfully happy. You are content, and by the time you realize that, you fear how that instant is going to pass.
The compulsive need we developed, filtering photos of those moments, is the result of what an old looking picture does to our brain. Basically, by filtering the moment you just snapped on your phone, you are creating the feeling of a memory, imprinting those sensations deeper inside yourself.

In the video below, Jason Silva from Shots of Awe tells brilliantly how every Instagram user experiences the anticipated memory as a way of magnifying every experience.
